A Wasaga Beach, Ont. man has filed suit against the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) after they offered him a free buffet dinner instead of the $42.9 million jackpot he thought he won.

Paul Kusznirewicz sat at a Buccaneer slot machine in the Georgian Downs casino in Innisfil, Ontario and pumped about $60 into it before the machine lit up.

“The lights and the sounds. It was saying on the machine ‘Call attendant. You have won a jackpot of over $42 million,’ ” Kusznirewicz said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

A casino floor attendant rushed to the scene to congratulate Kusznirewicz on the win, however once supervisors appeared, the 55 year old retired butcher was told that he would not be paid the massive jackpot because the machine was broken.

The OLG and the casino contend that the maximum payout for the Buccaneer slot machine is only $9,025.00 and the $42 million figure is not a possible award for the machine.

“It malfunctioned. It clearly malfunctioned,” said spokesperson Allison Sparkes. “Each machine has a posted sign that says malfunction voids all pays and plays.”

Kusznirewicz was offered a coupon for a free buffet dinner for two at the casino for the error. When he complained, it was upgraded to dinner for four. He decided to get a lawyer instead.
