A State Assembly panel voted Thursday to back a plan for a lottery in Nevada, despite arguments that it would compete with slot machines and other games of chance.

“Let the voters decide,” said Assemblyman Paul Aizley.

Aizley is the chief sponsor of the plan, which would have to win approval from lawmakers this year and again in 2011 and then go to a public vote.

Proponents for the removal of the prohibition of a State Lottery in Nevada have argued that a majority of residents would support a lottery system to help boost funding for schools and other state run programs.

However, the idea has been brought in front of lawmakers more than two dozen times since 1970 in the gambling capital of the U.S. and failed to pass each time.

Obviously, the most opposition to the plan would come from the Casino Industry. They argue that the increased competition in the state’s largest industry would actually hurt Nevada’s economy more than it would help. Casino companies say more net jobs would be lost with the introduction of a Nevada State Lottery.
