The European Commission ended a formal year-long inquiry into the United States’ Internet Gambling laws.

The Commission is the executive branch of the European Union (EU), a body responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding the Union’s treaties as well as running the day to day operations of the Union.

The inquiry was put in motion to investigate whether U.S. laws concerning online gambling violate commitments made by the U.S. government to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to the report, the commission has found that by pursuing criminal prosecutions, and other enforcement actions against foreign Internet gambling operators, the U.S. is in direct violation of international trade rule set forth by the WTO.

“It is for the U.S. to decide how best to regulate Internet gambling in its market,” said EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton. “But this must be done in a way that fully respects WTO obligations.”

It is unclear at this time how the Obama administration will handed the commission’s findings, however the Justice Department and the U.S. Trade Representative’s office did say that both agencies would review the report and discuss it with the EU.
