The Florida Senate is pushing a resolution to expand the state’s casinos. Under the package, resorts like the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL would be able to give players a more Vegas-style gaming experience.

The plan would allow in full casino games like craps, roulette, blackjack and the most eye-opening, no-limit poker. Currently, Florida law generally limits buy-ins to a maximum of $100. In poker tournaments, buy-ins can go a bit higher, into the hundreds of dollars range, but not beyond that.

With Florida, like many other states, mired in a budget deficit, lawmakers are desperate to find more ways of generating revenue. These types of changes would certainly entice high-stakes poker tournaments like those broadcast on ESPN and other cable networks to bring their business to the Sunshine State.

The expansion would also bring blackjack tables to many of the state’s racetracks and other parimutuels.

Another big change would be the provision creating a uniform, 18-year-old “minimum to play” age to casinos. Currently, Florida’s gambling age is split. At 18, players can bet on greyhounds and horses or play poker, however, the age is 21 for slots, blackjack and baccarat.

Supporters say these changes could bring in $1 billion a year in annual revenue, but opponents fear that this plan could change the identity of the State of Florida in a negative way.
