The Internet Gambling industry looks to be finally getting their day in the sun. The chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank, says he plans to introduce his bill lifting the ban on Internet gambling when Congress returns from their Easter recess.
“After the break,” said the chairman. “Definitely in April.”
In February of this year, Frank announced that he would be introducing a bill to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA). However, with the chairman focused on the nation’s economic crisis, online casinos haven’t seen an official resolution brought to Capitol Hill.
Frank’s latest statements bring both good and bad news to the industry. Internet gambling companies are happy to see a clearer time-table set in motion, but there may be some troubling news as well.
Chairman Frank plans to set forth Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, as a “stand-alone bill” and not attached to any other resolution in an effort to fast-track his legislation. Though this move may be called admirable, even by opponents, it will surely make the bill harder to pass.
This is quite different from the way the original UIGEA was passed back in 2006. Republicans attached the Internet gambling ban to a vital port security bill at the eleventh hour.
Frank said it would be “inappropriate” to follow suit.
