With the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship set for tonight in Detroit, the biggest question on the minds of college hoops fans is; can the Spartans actually run with North Carolina?
Odds makers are calling the Michigan State Spartans heavy underdogs as they head into Monday night’s Championship game against the North Carolina Tarheels. NCAA betting lines list North Carolina at about a 7.5 point favorite with the money line at about -360. The total is sitting around 153.
With the chips stacked against them, the Spartans hope to control all aspects of the game and beat the Tarheels to bring home their third National Title.
Michigan State will need to slow things down to get a leg up on North Carolina’s fast break and secondary break ability. Last time out the Spartans challenged UConn to an up-tempo game and ran the Huskies off the court. They probably won’t be able to do the same with the Tarheels.
On paper, Michigan State’s only advantage in this one may just be their depth. Against UConn, the Spartans played eleven different players, ten of them scored points. They are going to need that again tonight.
