Earlier this week, Internet gambling company PartyGaming PLC and the U.S. Government reached an agreement that will keep the online gaming company from facing prosecution.
It has been reported that in exchange for U.K. based giant agreeing to pay a $105 million fee, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has agreed not to prosecute PartyGaming or any of its subsidiaries for providing internet gambling services to customers in the U.S.
PartyGaming is best known for its online poker room PartyPoker.com. Before the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006, PartyGaming was the world’s largest online poker brand name. Since then the company has diminished some, however, still remains the world’s fourth largest Internet gambling company.
In accordance with the settlement, along with the fee, PartyGaming admits to offering internet gaming to players in the U.S. from 1997 to 2006.
The news sent overseas gambling stocks soaring. Some experts see this agreement leading to further settlements, thus stabilizing the industry as a whole. Forecasters see the door opening in the industry and see future consolidation and expansion outside the U.S.
