With former Republican Senator Alfonse D’Amato leading the charge, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has announced their intention to spend $3 million lobbying Congress to overturn the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

The UIEGA bans financial institutions from handling transactions between U.S. residents and offshore online gambling companies.

D’Amato and the alliance believe the issue of internet gambling is a matter of personal choice and the UIGEA takes away part of the freedom that makes this country great.

“How dare you come into my house and tell me what I can and can’t do on the Internet,” D’Amato said.

D’Amato hopes to help get the ban on internet gambling in the U.S. completely lifted, however the PPA might settle for an exemption for online poker as they face some extremely powerful opposition.

The biggest advocate of preserving the UIGEA is the National Football League. The NFL hired a full-time lobbyist and started a political action committee to make campaign donations.

D’Amato said he had no problem with letting the league ban betting on their games, but has argued that online poker should be legal.
