Barney Frank, chairman of the US House Financial Services Committee, has finally presented legislation that would legalise internet gambling in the US and pave the way for overseas companies to return to the market.
Frank’s Bill seeks to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006. This law currently prohibits credit card companies and banks from processing payments from bets placed on online gambling Web sites.
The bill, entitled “The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act,” will repeal the major obstacles of the UIGEA and go further in protecting Americans from fraud, while safeguarding against underage and problem gamblers, says Frank.
The opposition argues that bringing gambling into the home via the internet would only increase the chances for and even encourage gambling addiction at a young age.
Frank feels that this point of view only attacks the freedom Americans pride themselves from being a part of.
“The notion that a society should prohibit something entirely because of the possibility that children will abuse it is a terrible blow to liberty,” Frank said.
