Las Vegas Sands Corporation has opened its first East Coast Casino last week. The Sands Bethlehem is the casino company’s first in the Eastern Pennsylvania region.
Set on the former site of the Bethlehem Steel Mill, the new $743 million casino and resort hopes to revitalize the region as well slumping casino corp. The company’s first-quarter losses widened to over $87 million from $11.2 million from a year ago as revenue stagnated at $1.08 billion for the quarter.
Bethlehem Steel operated for more than 140 years before closing its doors in 1995. The plant produced everything from military equipment to structural supports for iconic landmarks and employed generations of Eastern Pennsylvania families.
The casino itself houses 3,000 slot machines and four restaurants; including one created by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. It will be the eighth casino to open in Pennsylvania since the state legalized slots gambling in 2004.
The casino drew more than 20,000 visitors on its first day of operation and hopes to draw more patrons from all over the Northeast.
Robert DeSalvio, Sands Bethlehem casino president, said there are more than 17 million people located within 75 miles of the casino.
