The Shinnecock Indian Nation took a large step toward federal recognition when it entered into a settlement with the Interior Department. The Shinnecocks have long been recognized by the State of New York, however they have been mired in a court for more than 30 years with the federal government as to their status.

The recent settlement gives the fed until Dec. 15 to make a preliminary ruling on the Shinnecocks’ status.

The Shinnecocks are based in Southampton, N.Y. Upon federal recognition, they would have the right to build a “Class II” casino on their 800-acre reservation. This would mean they could have thousands of video slot machines.

The Shinnecocks see a casino in close proximity to the Hamptons as a way to lift their members out of poverty.

“We’re surrounded by the wealthiest communities in the country, yet the state of affairs on the reservation is one of off-handed neglect,” said Frederick C. Bess, one of the Shinnecock Nation’s three trustees.
