As the state of Massachusetts debates the possible expansion of legalized gambling, companies like Wynn Resorts may be looking at New England.

The state already has gambling with a lottery and pari-mutuel wagering at horse and dog tracks, but with a revenue shortfall legislators are taking a look at allowing standalone casinos; as well as slot machines at the tracks.

Supports of expansion say that dollars are flowing out of the state to casinos and slot machine facilities in New York and other neighboring states. They hope that the Massachusetts economy would certainly benefit from keeping that money in state.

Besides Wynn Resorts, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun, Penn National Gaming, Station Casinos Inc. and Boyd Gaming Corp. are all reportedly looking at expansion opportunities in Massachusetts.

A subsidiary of Wynn Resorts recently hired the Boston lobbying firm ML Strategies to help sway legislators.

“Wynn believes that its financial strength and development expertise may be a good match for the state,” said Nancy J. Sterling, a senior vice president at ML Strategies. “Wynn is interested in participating in the process as it unfolds.”
