Illinois’ Democratic-led Senate has voted to expand the state’s casino industry into Chicago and three other cities, However, the plan is still far from becoming reality.

The bill approved with a vote of 30-28 would add four additional casinos to the state’s current fleet of nine and allow horse racetracks to install slot machines.

Though the plan has been approved by the Senate, now heads to the House, where Speaker Michael Madigan has declared expanded gambling a dead issue this year. The House voted nearly four years ago to completely ban all casino gambling.

The new casinos would be located in Rockford, Danville, Chicago and suburban Chicago.

Supporters argued the major gambling addition would revitalize local economies at a time when jobs are scarce.

“The best dollars we can raise in the state of Illinois quite frankly are Hoosier dollars,” said Sen. Mike Frerichs.

But critics think that an expansion of this size, would make Illinois one of the largest gambling meccas in the nation and that is not the right reputation this state wants.

“This is a step in the wrong direction. Please don’t take it,” said Sen. Matt Murphy.
