Minnesota State officials have, for now, abandoned their attempt to prevent people in the state from gambling online.

In April, the state had deemed all internet gambling conducted in Minnesota to be illegal, even though most of the gaming sites are based overseas. Operators of these types of sites are most commonly based in the United Kingdom and the Caribbean.

In turn, state law enforcement officials issued a written demand to internet providers instructing them to block hundreds of online gambling sites. Subsequently, a federal lawsuit was filed by the gambling industry siting violations of federal commerce and free-speech laws.

However, now the State of Minnesota has apparently changed its tune.

In exchange for the state backing off, the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association have filed court papers to end its court fight.

“Whether or not (the service providers) ultimately would have prevailed in court is unknown,” said John Willems of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division.

He went on to say, “I believe it may be more appropriate to resolve this problem by working to create clear and effective government policies concerning regulation of gambling.”
