Authorities in Virginia have found a new way to crack down on what they have called illegal internet gambling operations in the state. Roanoke police have raided and seized equipment from two Internet cafes as part of an online gambling investigation. However, no arrests were made.
According to Police, officers used both cafes’ services to play online games such as Keno and Lucky Diamonds. An unnamed source close to the investigation said that officers won $54 over a six week period at one of the establishments.
“Fifty-four dollars? Well, that seems like a serious threat to society,” said a regular patron that wished to remain anonymous. “One would think that the resources used by police in this one could have been used to find some real crime.”
Ronnie Bennett, the owner of the Williamson Road cafe, said he operates a sweepstakes, and that it is not gambling. Bennett insists the sweepstakes is legal because it is free. His customers pay for Internet time and the sweepstakes is an added bonus.
