The National Football League has a long-standing anti-gambling stance, but could the league actually be warming up to the idea of the public betting on games?
On the surface, no. It is not likely that we will see the NFL encouraging their fans to place a wager on a game anytime soon, but the league office might be coming around.
Last month the NFL began allowing teams to sign licensing deals with state lotteries. In fact, the Baltimore Ravens signed a $810,000 deal with the Maryland Lottery. With this deal in place, the lottery plans to sell $5 purple scratch-off tickets with the team’s logo starting in the preseason.
Similar deals have been struck between the Washington Redskins and the Virginia Lottery as well as the New England Patriots and the Massachusetts State Lottery.
With the league playing both sides of the issue, it is becoming clear that the NFL’s views on gambling are not necessarily about ethics, but are more about perception.
