According to reports, British bookmaker Betfair.com alerted authorities after seeing an unusual spike in action before a first-round Wimbledon match between virtual unknowns.
Tuesday’s match between 109th-ranked Wayne Odesnik of the United States and 30th-ranked Jurgen Melzer of Austria sparked quite a buzz when the betting firm saw six times as many wagers placed in the match than in any normal first-rounder. Almost all for Melzer.
A Betfair spokesman told the Associated Press that an alarmingly high amount of action caused them to contact tennis corruption investigators.
“Betfair received about $980,000 in wagers on the match,” the A.P. reports. “The average for a first-round match at Wimbledon is less than $163,000.”
Betfair did not suspend wagering, but other online betting sites like Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, did stop taking bets an hour before the match.
Betfair spokesman Mark Davies they did not suspect any wrongdoing in the matter as a TV announcer noted shortly before the match that Odesnik had a thigh injury. However, they felt an investigation would be in order.
Melzer won 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
