Almost 20 years since the fall of the Soviet Union brought gambling casinos back to Russia, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered the closure of all casinos and gambling halls in Moscow.
Putin calls the move an attempt to clean up a country that has long had a fascination with games of chance and to shut down an industry seen as a breeding ground for corruption and organized crime.
Critics have argued that this radical change will deprive the federal budget of billions of dollars a year in tax revenue and leave more than 400,000 people without work.
“They’ve killed the industry overnight,” said British founder of Storm International Michael Boettcher. “It’s like closing all the five-star restaurants in London because you’re eating too much.”
Many casinos and smaller slot machine parlors stayed open until the last possible moment, while the owners of a few gambling dens will be trying to expand their business abroad.
