As part of “National Poker Week,” the Poker Players Alliance and their chairman, former Senator Alfonse D’Amato, hope to convince Congress to legalize online poker.

The group has set up nearly 100 meetings with members of Congress this week, and they plan to present a petition entitled “Poker Is Not A Crime” to President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

Their goal is to get legislation passed that would license and regulate online poker.

In 2006, Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The bill’s intention was to curb online gambling by prohibiting financial institutions from accepting payments from credit cards, checks or electronic fund transfers to settle online wagers.

However, the law doesn’t provide a clear definition of unlawful Internet gambling, instead it refers to, unclear existing federal and state laws, which open themselves up to many differing interpretations.

The poker group supports legislation by House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank. He plans to introduce a new bill to lift the ban on Internet gambling before the end of the year.
