Everyone knows, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

That is because Las Vegas, Nevada, the country’s largest gambling market, spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year to promote itself.

However, Atlantic City, New Jersey, the nation’s second-largest gambling market, has had no such luck. It has a racy slogan, “Always Turned On” they just do not have the money to spread it around.

Suffering from it’s worst period of economic hardship in their 31-year history and trying to stave off competitors up all around them, Atlantic City’s 11 casinos want to spend $20 million a year to promote the oceanfront resort town.

The Casino Association of New Jersey would like the state’s cash-strapped government to foot the bill, saying it would be an investment that would repay itself through an increase in taxable revenue.

Atlantic City makes more than half of its money from slot machines, but has been losing business to slots-only parlors in Pennsylvania and New York. For the first seven months of this year, Atlantic City casinos won $2.3 billion, down 14.9 percent from the same period in 2008.
