Historically, the month of July has always been strong month in the gambling business. However, even with the nation sunk deep in recession, Louisiana’s state licensed casinos posted more than a 13 percent increase in winnings in July over June.

According to revenue reports, 13 riverboats won over $154 million last month, while Harrah’s downtown New Orleans casino took in $29.5 million. The state’s four slot machine casinos at race tracks won $36.1 million for a total of $220.3 million.

Nationally, the casino industry has been lagging because of cutbacks in travel due to the recession. Traditionally, July is boosted by the Independence Day holiday weekend and more travel.

July’s total’s were down a little over 5 percent from July 2008, but a big leap from June of this year. The June figure was down almost 11 percent from June 2008.

The figures do not include Louisiana’s three Indian casinos. They are not required to report their winnings to the public.
