The Poarch Band of Creek Indians has purchased controlling interests in both the Pensacola Greyhound Track and Mobile Greyhound Park with their ultimately goal to get slot machines at the facilities.
The Poarch Creeks are the only federally recognized Indian tribe in Alabama.
“So much money goes from Florida and Alabama over to Mississippi that it only makes sense,” says Eddie Menton, chairman of the Mobile County Racing Commission. “We can’t get anybody to understand that. It would be huge money for both states.”
Both tracks have had some financial difficulties as of late.
Recently, the Pensacola track had to cut its staff and suspend live races. Simulcast races from other dog tracks were shown on television monitors. Experts felt that the Mobile track probably would not have been operating two years from now because they just can not compete with casinos.
