According to police, after months of investigating, law enforcement officers raided a Murray, Utah Internet cafe, saying a lot more than web-surfing was going on at The Fortune Cafe.
A short time after the cafe opened it’s doors, undercover investigators were sent in to find out exactly what was happening on the computers inside.
Apparently locals called the place, “The Casino.”
Police found patrons playing online gambling games like keno, poker and slots. Investigators say customers would buy a cash card, swipe that at a computer terminal and pick their game. The money on the cash card was non-refundable, but customers could cash in on winnings.
“They have ATMs in there and a cash closet where they could deal with them there or swipe the card in an ATM and redeem all their winnings,” said police Detective Kenny Bass.
Six employees were arrested on suspicion of gambling-related charges and more than 45 alleged customers were cited and released.
The operators of the cafe said that their games are a sweepstakes run on a system in which the more Internet time customers buy, the more chances they have to win, However, they can request to be entered at no cost.
Police say that no matter what they call it, it’s illegal gambling.
