A challenge to the nation’s Internet gambling ban from an association of off-shore bookies was rejected in a federal appeals court in Philadelphia.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected arguments from Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association in New Jersey, which had filed the lawsuit hoping to legalize online betting in that state.

The challenge was directed at Congress’ Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The federal law bans online gambling in the state where the individual or gambling business conducts the transaction.

The association estimates that sports betting could bring $100 million or more in tax revenue to the states themselves. They argue that gambling is happening, if it remains underground, the government can’t profit from it.

Association chairman Joe Brennan Jr. noted that New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine wants to get involved in the case in support of sports betting.

“There’s a lot of interest in it just because of the times and the straits the states find themselves in,” Brennan said.
