In Marion County, Florida sheriff’s deputies have broken up another Internet gambling operation, this time in a strip mall.
Detectives say another gambling hall masquerading as an Internet cafe is closed for business. Agents raided the hall on State Road 200 in Ocala on Thursday and arrested the employee.
The Internet Express was full when deputies served their search warrant in a raid on Thursday. The patrons inside saw it as harmless entertainment, however investigators called an illegal gambling operation that raked in $1,200 to $2,600 per day.
“Why jump on this place,” said one patron. “There are many people who come here and enjoy it.”
Witnesses say that customers only purchased cards to use the Internet and access to games where they could win prize money. Police say that’s the very definition of gambling.
Deputies say they confiscated over 40 computers and they’re warning patrons to stay away. The sheriff’s office in conjuction with DEA have taken the lead in shutting down these kinds cafes all over.
