The State of Massachusetts may have taken one large step closer to rolling the dice on resort style casinos in the Bay State.
House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, one of the most powerful members of the state legislature, put his cards on the table and revealed for the first time that he would support a major casino development.
“Up until now I’ve been a supporter of slots at the race track,” said DeLeo. “But I think that if we’re going to get the full economic effect and full economic impact in terms of jobs and increased revenue I think we have to look at the idea of resort casinos as well.”
DeLeo’s support for casino expansion comes as a newly formed alliance of gambling industry executives and compulsive gambling experts host an educational forum at Suffolk Downs in East Boston.
They are expected to discuss topics such as problem gambling prevention, treatment, and research on responsible gambling initiatives.
Gov. Deval Patrick and Senate President Therese Murray also support legalizing casinos. The issue could go before lawmakers before the mid-November recess.
