The State of Illinois’ new gambling initiative, referred to as the Video Gaming Act, was signed into law in July, with the hopes of funding a third of the states $31 billion Capital bill.

The purpose of the Video Gaming Act is intended to allow the use of video gaming machines like slots and poker in local bars, restaurants and other establishments in unincorporated areas of Illinois.

Lake County officials voted 18-4, on Tuesday, to pass an ordinance that would allow them to opt out of the initiative. Lake County is the latest county to join forces with the growing number of communities in opposition, along with Cook and DuPage counties.

Despite the possibility of the county raking in over $900,000 a year in revenue and priority consideration for local state road projects, most County Board members opposed the bill.

The majority of the members were in agreement that allowing the act, put their county at risk of increased crime, bankruptcy, gambling addition and other woes that would adversely affect families.
