State Senate President John Cullerton and the Illinois Racing Board have made history this week by becoming the first US state to officially legalize online gambling.
Illinois gamblers are now able to place bets on horse races all over the country through three approved Advance Deposit Wagering companies, including TwinSpires and YouBet.
By allowing online wagering of the races, the tracks hope to attract a younger web savvy clientele as well as make it easier for patrons to place bets when circumstances may prevent them from getting to the track.
The board estimates the state will profit up to $1 million in revenue each year by taxing each transaction 1.75 percent. Profits will also be split with the ADW site, horseman and the race associations.
Dave Zenner, a spokesman for Arlington Park says “It’s going to help the track and it’s going to help the purses.”
While state law permits gambling as of the age of 18; two of the companies approved for betting require participants to be 21 years of age.
