Norovirus Outbreak At Harrah’s Casino

Since the norovirus surfaced at Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee on January 12 a cleaning crew has been disinfecting more than 3,000 slot machines, door knobs, escalator handrails and restrooms hourly.

Casino spokesman Charles Pringle said once cleaning crews finish a section, they go back to the beginning and start again.

The Jackson County Health Department is investigating the outbreak, and a state health official said on Thursday that because of precautionary measures being taken it is safe to go to the casino.

However officials fear that the recent outbreak at the casino will spread throughout the community and other areas as some patrons travel from miles.

David Bergmire-Sweat, North Carolina’s food-borne disease epidemiologist explained that the virus is spread by touching infected surfaces and that the outbreak most likely stems from a patron that was carrying the virus.

Bergmire-Sweat also commented that considering the casino has approximately 7,500 vistors daily that the amount of those who have been infected is relatively few.
